Lesson 7 of 7 · 9 min
Use AI responsibly
Goal:Know the four rules that keep your work, and the people in it, safe.
THE PERSON IN THE ROOM
uxuiopen.comDesigners work with real people's stories, faces and data. Using AI well means protecting them, being honest about how work was made, and noticing who the tools leave out.
- Privacy: remove personal details before you paste.
- Disclosure: say when AI helped, and what you changed.
- Ownership: check each tool's terms before client work.
- Bias: look at who appears in AI output, and who's missing.
Words to know
- Personal data
- Anything that identifies someone: names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, photos of faces, and details that point to one person.
- Consent
- Permission people gave for how their words or images are used. Check it covers AI tools before you use them.
- Disclosure
- Saying openly that AI helped, and what you did yourself.
- Bias
- Patterns in AI output that favor some people and leave others out, often repeated from training data.
Practice the first rule: black out everything personal in this interview note.
Click every word that identifies someone. Then check.
Safe to paste
- Your own brief and notes
- Anonymized quotes ("a student said…")
- Public information, with sources
- Your own designs
Never paste
- Names, emails, phone numbers
- Client work under NDA
- Photos of people without consent
- Passwords, keys, account details
Real situations are rarely labeled. Pick what you'd do in each one.
You recorded five user interviews and want AI to find themes quickly.
A client loves a logo direction that started as an AI image.
AI generated six personas for a banking app. All six are men in their thirties.
Disclosure is easier when you have the words ready. Build a one-line note you can put under any project in your portfolio: which tools helped, what they did, and what you did.
Pick what's true for a project, and copy the line.
Your disclosure line
Made with AI: ChatGPT helped me explore layout ideas. I chose the direction and rebuilt the design by hand in Figma.
Write your disclosure line
Write the disclosure for the poster you'll make in this unit's project.
- 1List every AI tool you used and what it did.
- 2List what you did by hand: choices, edits, checks.
- 3Write it as one honest line, like the builder above.
- 4Share it in the discussion and read two others.
A friend sends you their CV to redesign. Can you paste it into an AI tool?
